About

In conjunction with the exhibition L’OFFRE, on until March 11, 2018, DHC/ART has invited Residency for Artists on Hiatus (RFAOH) to set up a satellite office in the reading room, where they will conduct multiple events that will offer visitors opportunities to embrace the notion of “hiatus as a gift.”

RFAOH is an online residency available to artists who, for one reason or another, are not currently making or presenting art. Residents are selected based on their proposals of “on-hiatus” activities (or non-activities) through international calls, and post periodic reports on their “non- art” endeavour on the RFAOH website. As the pressure for artists to keep up with the demands of the institutionalized artworld increases, RFAOH allows artists freedom from the obligations of being an artist, and offers a space for reflection on alternative modes of creative living. Since 2013, RFAOH has hosted 19 artists on hiatus worldwide. Its third residency term ended this past July, and the co-directors are currently working on an upcoming publication, RFAOH Annual Reports.

The programme of events offered in the temporary office space encourages visitors to expand their perceptions about artists’ identities and practices. These events may also help participants to simply relax or get inspired, while nurturing sensitivity towards alternative modes of “achievement” and creative communication.

Programming

Open Office Wednesdays + On-Hiatus Proposal Review and Non-art Therapy (by appointment)

Every Wednesday, RFAOH’s co-directors will be working in the satellite office on their upcoming publication. Gallery visitors are welcome to stop by to chat with the directors and learn about RFAOH. Also, by appointment, the co-directors will review proposals of non-art projects by artists interested in applying for a future RFAOH residency. These 30-minute sessions may also serve to openly “discuss” hurdles of living as an artist or negotiating life within the artworld.

Please make an appointment for the proposal review session via email: [email protected].
